Lucent sees 30 acquisitions over next few years

NEW YORK, Sept 18 (Reuter) - Lucent Technologies Inc (LU) expects to make about 30 acquisitions over the next ``few years'' as it bolsters its data networking efforts, said company spokesman Steve Loudermilk.

The company declined to identify specific targets, or the potential value of the deals, but said it will try to use the acquisitions to fill gaps in its product and service line.

Lucent also declined to comment on industry speculation that it may be eyeing ODS Networks Inc (ODSI) and FORE Systems Inc (FORE).

The aggressive purchase plan and an increased emphasis on service will help Lucent meet its goal of being one of the top players in the data networking arena, Loudermilk said.

On Wednesday, Lucent introduced a new data networking strategy and introduced a new product than can deliver up to twice the usable bandwidth at what, it said, was up to 25 percent lower cost per port than competing products.

Lucent also introduced an enhanced portfolio of other intelligent switching, access and network management products, and DEFINITY ATM to meet customer demand for voice-over-ATM.
