Spectra-Physics Lasers (NASDAQ: SPLI) designs, develops, manufactures and distributes lasers and laser systems for the industrial, original equipment manufacturer (OEM), and research and development markets.

SPLI is owned almost 80% by Thermo-Instrument Systems (AMEX: THIï). Consequently free float is only around 4 million, out of 16,2 million outstanding shares.

It's web presence can be found at: spectra-physics.com

Aside its longterm presence in active optical devices (mainly lasers) the company recently stressed the development of passive components as well. These efforts led to the development of optical coating capabilities, very useful indeed and prerequesites to the production of DWDM optical filters.

With announcements in the latter part of 1999 the company looks poised to become a competitor to SDLI (in diode pumped lasers) as well as JDSU/OCLI, OPTX (Netoptix) and POCI (Precision Optical). In short: over the next quarters, SPLI might emerge as a force to be reckoned with in the rank & file of fiberoptic related telecom companies.

Here's the most recent company announcement regarding DWDM filters:

SPECTRA-PHYSICS ANNOUNCES NEW LINE OF 200-GHZ NARROW-BAND PASS FILTERS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-December 9, 1999-Spectra-Physics (Nasdaq:SPLI), a majority-owned subsidiary of Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (Amex:THI) and the leading supplier of high-power semiconductor and solid-state laser systems, today announced a new line of narrow- band pass filters to support the requirements of the telecommunications industry for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) applications. As the newest addition to Spectra-Physics' Zeroshiftâ product family of passive optical components for telecommunications, the 200-GHz filters are designed to provide exceptional insertion loss, pass-band and isolation performance, which increase the performance of DWDM and optical add drop multiplexer (OADM) devices.

"Expanding the Zeroshift product line to include 200-GHz filters is an important step forward in our telecommunications market strategy," said Patrick L. Edsell, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Spectra-Physics. "We are able to apply nearly 40 years of experience in manufacturing high-performance optical products for laser applications, and we have focused our optics business on the telecommunications market opportunity."

The new Zeroshift filters meet all Bellcore requirements for environmental exposure and durability. They are centered on the ITU grid and are available in a variety of grades, depending on system requirements.

Other Zeroshift products available today include anti-reflection coatings on gradient index lenses and lithium niobate isolators, as well as high-reflector coatings used in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers.

Spectra-Physics' vertically integrated manufacturing operations include all aspects of substrate fabrication, thin film coating, post-processing metrology, and Bellcore testing capabilities. For more information, call 1-888-735-5774 or visit spectra-physics.com.
