(NASDAQ:NMS:MXWL) announced today that its PurePulse Technologies Inc. subsidiary has been advised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that its petition for the use of pulsed light (PureBright) for control of bacteria, molds, yeasts, and other microorganisms on food products has been approved. "PureBright is a major advance in food technology that has the potential to improve the quality and safety of the food supply," said Wayne Clark, President of PurePulse Technologies. Last October clearance was received for our CoolPure process for the cool preservation of fluid foods such as liquid eggs, juices, soups and sauces. When you add our PureBright process for water treatment to our two food technologies, it is evident that Maxwell Technologies offers a powerful family of products for addressing very serious global needs for improving the safety of food and drinking water." The PureBright process uses very brief pulses of high intensity white light to kill microorganisms in water and on the surface of perishable foods. PureBright illumination is similar in composition to sunlight but significantly more intense when it flashes for a fraction of a second. By killing surface microorganism, PureBright can extend the shelf life of many foods and reduce health risks associated with food-borne pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli. Laboratory tests have demonstrated 90%-99% reductions in Salmonella on meats and a doubling of shelf life of certain baked goods. In addition to treating food and water, the PureBright process is also being commercialized for sterilizing food packaging materials, medical and pharmaceutical products, and air. (MXWL) changed its name to Maxwell Technologies Inc., effective Monday, and named three unit presidents. In a press release, Maxwell said it named Gregg McKee president of the Energy Products unit, Kelly Hickel president of the Information Systems unit and Walter Robertson was named president of the Federal unit. The new units are part of a reorganization announced June 24. The company said it seeks to accelerate its timetable for turning its technologies into ''rapidly growing sales and income.'' McKee was president of Quantum Corp.'s (QNTM) Quantum Malaysia unit. Hickel, who has been with Maxwell for three years, was the head of the company's Information Systems operations, which was a unit of Maxwell's former S-Cubed division. Robertson was chief executive of Biosolutions Inc., a startup environmental cleanup company. Maxwell expects ''substantial opportunities'' in surveillance systems, information systems and space systems as a result of the move of the U.S. Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command to San Diego from Washington.
