Enough of Making Money! What about giving it away?

It's Thanksgiving. I've had a pretty good year this year, and I'm thinking about giving some away before the end of the tax year. There are many people in the same position. On SI we spend a lot of time and energy trying to make money. We should be just as fastidious in how we give it away.

In the end, charitable donations will be a personal matter. Issues that appeal to our ego, guilt, sense of identity, etc. will tend to win out, but there is also the question of efficiency. I would like this thread to concentrate on that; the "bang for the buck." I stopped donating to one organisation when I saw an ad for a position for which I thought the salary was excessive. The charity's position was that they wanted the best candidate for the job. They had a point, everyone's idea of excessive is different.

Since I am starting this thread, I'll make some pleas:

No sanctimonious posting
I don't want to know how good you are, or how pitiable the cause is. Just give us a brief description of the organisation: what they do, where they do it, where their money comes, who does the work. If possible, give a web-site.

Feel free to post the downside
Excessive bureaucracy, reliance on bungling amateurs, spending too much on overpaid professionals. Even, perhaps, that a given problem is so intractable as to be hopeless, rendering any action pointless. There are likely to be different opinions. Please air these, but keep the discussions civil, and free from self-rightousness.
